Abstract
The problem of obtaining an optimal control law for a class of nonlinear second order differential control systems with boundary values and a nonlinear cost functional is considered. A combined technique using the calculus of variations and a finite element method for solving the problem is discussed. This technique generates a unique global optimal solution for certain classes of systems and cost functionals. A numerical method for obtaining the solution is investigated. The techniques developed are demonstrated through several examples
