Abstract :
Ocean surface currents, nondirectional wave information and winds are extracted from the power spectra of a high frequency (HF) 40-element narrow beam antenna. The steerable, frequency modulated interrupted continuous wave (FMICW) radar system, operating in the ground wave mode, collects backscattered radiation from a 120° ocean sector extending 200 km from Cape Race, Newfoundland. Nondirectional ocean spectral comparison is made between the radar and a waverider buoy and significant waveheights are compared with data from the buoy, reports from the Canadian Meteorology and Oceanography Centre (METOC) and with values output by the Canadian Spectral Ocean Wave Model (CSOWM). Surface wind speeds, obtained through a least-squares comparison of measured and modelled radar spectra, are validated with data provided by the Atmospheric Environment Service (AES)
