Abstract :
The design of a low-cost beacon receiver based on software defined radio is presented. The motivation for such a receiver is to investigate atmospheric impairments at the Ka and Q/V frequency bands. The receiver has been tested by the Eutelsat Hotbird 6 satellite beacon signal. Beacon signal attenuation has been compared to rainfall measurements and to modeled ITU-R scintillation distributions. We have shown that the frequency drift can be well compensated by PLL, implemented in GNU Radio.
