Abstract :
Scattering by a two-part plane is an important topic in diffraction theory and is relevant for many practical applications. It has long been observed that in the propagation of radio waves above the surface of the Earth, the properties of the ground are of great significance. The shoreline between sea and dry ground, the junction between different types of vegetation or between vegetation and ground are only some of the cases which may be encountered as discontinuities in the properties of the terrain. Plane discontinuities are present also in composite structures such as aircraft, satellites, etc. The configuration considered constitutes a canonical problem for analyzing the scattering caused by an abrupt change in the material properties of a surface.
