Abstract :
The OMEGA Acoustic Research System comprises a modular vertical hydrophone array and associated electronics, telemetry, data processing, and mechanical handling systems, and was developed to fulfil the requirement for a research and reference system for the Defence Research Establishment Atlantic´s undersea environmental acoustic experiments through the 1990s. The array can be employed in a free floating or in a bottom tethered configuration, comprises up to 19 channels of 16 bit digital data over the frequency range 1 Hz to 1900 Hz from acoustic and non-acoustic sensors, and has been tested at apertures up to 450 metres. This paper presents an overview of the system, discusses initial performance results, and indicates the direction of further development activity
