Abstract :
Terminal voltage of a synchronous generator drops by increasing the generator current due to the large inductance present in the generator called synchronous reactance. This paper suggests an active series compensation device named magnetic energy recovery switch (MERS) applied for engine generator performance improvement. The MERS can compensate for the voltage drop across the synchronous reactance and control the load voltage quickly compared with excitation current control by AVR (Auto voltage regulator). As a result, the MERS can improve the generator efficiency and transient over power characteristics.
