Abstract :
The Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center (NCCOSC) has recently developed to sidescan data recording system for the the Navy´s Sonar Array Bathymetry Survey System (SASS). Results from several sea trials indicate that, in addition to precise swath bathymetry charts, the SASS system can produce sidescan images similar in appearance to those produced by other sidescan and multibeam systems. Complete control of system gains and operating parameters, hardware calibration, and precise measurements of bathymetry, make it possible to accurately quantify the backscatter signal strength. This results in a calibrated swath reflectivity image from which geomorphic sediment characterization can be inferred
