Abstract
This paper presents a novel shared protection framework for online provisioning in distributed controlled survivable wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) mesh networks. This framework contains two integrated protocols. The protocol is the signaling technique that probes each path as both a candidate working path and a candidate shared protection path at the same time. The second protocol is the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) protocol that is an intelligent destination routing protocol based on fixed alternative routing to select the connectionpsilas working and shared protection paths. We propose a new enhanced version of the most sharing scheme to select the wavelength for the shared protection path. This new scheme aims to maximize the usage of shared protection wavelengths, thus improving the network resource utilization. The significant contribution of this integrated framework in terms of connection request blocking probability is discussed and we show, using extensive simulation experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed protocol.
