Abstract :
The recent explosion in Internet traffic implies a paradigm shift from a voice network to a data centered network. The most important requirement for this network is a large bandwidth transport capability to make the paradigm shift possible. Photonic networks, employing electrical time-division multiplexing (ETDM) technology and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) technology, appear to be the solution. This paper describes a future photonic network and advanced devices indispensable for the network. It presents high-speed InP-based HFET digital ICs, integrated semiconductor laser diodes, novel photodiodes and optical lightwave circuit devices, which are keys to the development of compact and low-cost photonic network systems
