Abstract :
Motion estimation plays an integral role in many video compression schemes as a means of exploiting the temporal redundancies which exist between frames. However, most algorithms currently available for performing motion estimation are based on exhaustive search procedures which create a bottle-neck in the coding process due to their computational complexity. Design of improved video codecs, particularly for low bit rates, requires fast and efficient algorithms for performing the motion estimation. An efficiently designed algorithm should have the capability of adapting itself to the particular signal sequence being processed. As a result of much promising research currently being pursued in multidimensional subband coding, the importance of subband analysis as a valuable, formal analysis tool has increased vastly. In this paper, we present novel techniques based on subband analysis for performing fast and efficient motion estimation
