Abstract :
The paper reviews the recent progress and future prospects of planar waveguide devices such as silica PLC (Planar lightwave circuits), InP PIC (Photonic integrated circuits), and silicon photonics. Planar waveguide devices are widely regarded as the best technology to meet the requirements of rapid bandwidth growth and energy-efficient on-chip communications while reducing cost per bit. One of the most prominent advantages of photonics interconnects over metallic interconnects is higher bandwidth and signal routing functionality using WDM technology. I will discuss how to make the best use of the strength of integrated photonics devices.
