Using commercial design software as an aid for teaching electromagnetics

Commercial software has been used successfully as an aid in teaching electromagnetics at the University of Sussex for several years. With this experience in mind, an overview is presented on how software can be used to form an integral part of teaching courses. As well as introducing students to the basics of a software package, they are also shown the merits of first obtaining an approximate solution using simple theory, followed by a more detailed numerical analysis.
