Abstract :
In this paper, the control ofa variable speed wind turbine with induction generator is described. The system to be controlled is multivariable with the inputs being the reference generator torque and pitch demand and the outputs the generator torque and generator speed. The most appropriate controller structure is a diagonal one, which simplifies the control design task considerably reducing it to two SISO problems. Below rated wind speed, control of generator speed is achieved via the reference torque. Above rated, speed control is achieved via pitch action and generator torque control is achieved via the reference torque. Care must be taken when implementing the control system since the control errors contain discontinuities.
