Abstract :
A method for monitoring coral reefs and detecting coral reef bleaching by satellite sensors is developed. The difference in radiance from shallow sand and from corals is examined and compared among multitemporal satellite images. The method is effective for images with clouds which may cause the difference of atmospheric condition and incident light locally. Using this method in historical Landsat TM images, a severe bleaching event in 1998 appears to be detected
