Abstract
A supervisory multicontroller scheme has been presented in this paper. The supervisor element has both the tasks of interpreting engineering type user specifications as well as choosing between a number of different control algorithms based on the specified performance criteria and continual monitoring of the effectiveness of each controller in achieving these criteria using an estimated model. The results which are presented in this paper demonstrate the successful ability of the scheme in choosing the most effective control algorithm for a given set of user specifications, and it is noted that in the case of the simulation study presented, the self-tuning PID controller was selected despite the fact that it was one of the simplest control strategies available.
