Abstract :
The author discusses current research on gigabit lightwave LANs (local area networks) and shows where novel devices and architectures might have a particularly strong impact. Attention is given to research activity on lightwave LANs connected with signal-power and transmission-bandwidth considerations. The coherent lightwave reception technique is also discussed.<>
