Abstract
The authors present a method for solving the channel equalization problem by using fuzzy logic. The membership functions are derived from the training data set and do not have to be predefined. A method for combining the outcomes of different rules is also proposed. The performance of the method is compared with that of the transversal-filter-based equalizer. It is shown using simulations that the transversal filter requires a much larger training set to achieve the same error rate and that the fuzzy equalizer performs better in the presence of channel nonlinearities
