Abstract
A Mach-Zehnder modulator biased at quadrature point is used to generate the fourth hannonic of a fundamental frequency while suppressing all the odd harmonics and most importantly the 2nd hannonic by more than 35 dB. The system is tested and verified. A novel method for transmission of modulated data using direct modulation of the laser diode driving the electro-optic modulator is also introduced which results in a modulated microwave signal at the frequency of the fourth hannonic at the output of the receiver. It is shown that the phase noise of the fourth harmxonic frequency is no worse than that for an ideal multiplier. Compared with previous work, this solution simplifies the system implementation considerably.
