Abstract
A unified mathematical approach for the study of the theory of inference is presented. The authors introduce the notion of inference channels and consider the truth values flowing among these channels. They study the mathematical structure of these inference channels based on a framework of knowledge representation and thus establish a theory of inference to gain an insight into the core of approximate reasoning
