Abstract
Satellite systems are some of the key telecommunications systems which have the potential of achieving ubiquitous and global personal communications. The satellite component of IMT-2000 based on DS/CDMA system, such as SW-CDMA, has been proposed. For such systems, power control (PC) is critical, and only open loop power control (OLPC) is feasible. We propose an adaptive OLPC method for DS/CDMA satellite communication systems based on a Markov chain channel model. We then derive the Erlang capacity of the satellite DS/CDMA system with this PC scheme and demonstrate that power Control error (PCE) affects the Erlang capacity significantly. In addition, dual-satellite diversity is considered and we show that diversity can significantly improve the Erlang capacity of the satellite CDMA system
