Abstract :
Traditional methods of monitoring changes in land use and land cover using remotely sensed imagery are combined with investigations into the societal issues and political pressures present on and around Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in an effort to identify both the patterns and extent of land use and land cover change as well as the social reasons driving those changes. This multi-year project hopes to develop a truly sustainable monitoring and management plan for this critical environment which allows the native populations to maintain much of their traditional homelands and practices by integrating the human dimension of environmental change.
