Abstract :
We present a description of, and results for, a hardware implementation of an adaptive array. A sample matrix inversion (SMI) algorithm was used, and its bit error rate (BER) performance on frequency-selective fading channels is tested. There are four antenna elements. The transmission rate is 4.096 Mb/s. We applied digital signal processing to the control of the array weights, using a multi-CPU/DSP system with a real-time operating system. The laboratory experiments show that our four-element SMI adaptive array successfully suppresses the signal on delayed paths and provides a spatial diversity for channels suffering from frequency-selective fading, when individual paths for each antenna element are all independently Rayleigh faded
