Abstract
Electron beam formation in magnetically insulated coaxial diode with tubular cold cathode and a strongly non-uniform electric field was investigated with picosecond resolution. Voltage pulses of amplitudes up to -170 kV (in a traveling wave mode) and FWHM not exceed 250 ps were applied to the cathode. Under such accelerating pulse parameters the polishing effect has a fundamental influence on the emissive characteristics. The time and amplitude parameters of electron beam injection were compared experimentally for different cathode materials with gas or vacuum insulation of accelerating gap.
