Abstract
This paper looks at the application of situation awareness (SA) in third generation cellular networks. To successfully implement this concept, a number of new technologies must be incorporated into the base stations. This paper considers how adaptive coverage might be realised in practice. In particular, the use of an overlaid sector (or beam) is discussed in detail. The analysis shows that under optimum conditions, an overlaid beam from the home cell can support approximately one quarter of the users in the neighbouring cell
