Abstract
A combined source coding and channel coding scheme is proposed for efficient image transmission over the bandwidth limited radio channel. After error sensitivity analysis of the encoded image over a CDMA radio channel, an error-control scheme, based on block-interleaving in conjunction with concatenation coding, convolutional, and Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes, is proposed to minimize the effect of channel errors on picture quality degradation. The application of the new technique to the proposed Telecommunications Industry Association North American wideband digital cellular standard is examined
