Abstract
As a result of the ultra-wideband and low-loss signal transmission capability of optical fibers rapid progress has been made towards the development of fiber optic links for microwave and millimeterwave systems. In this paper, the transmission of microwave signals over fibers is first discussed based on the fundamental concepts of high-speed optical links. Furthermore, recent advances in microwave photonic device technologies for fiber optic interconnects are addressed and the basic RF performance is discussed. Finally, different applications of microwave and millimeterwave optical transmission systems currently under investigation are reviewed.
