  • Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. This paper discusses the types of premises that are within the scope of this special location and gives advice to enable a designer to establish the demarcation line between a general location and a special installation. The regulations for this particular location are considerably changed from those in the 16th Edition. Although under shock protection the 0.2 second disconnection time is no longer a requirement, also the 25 V touch voltage limit is removed. The requirements for protection against fire and thermal effects are enhanced, as are the measures for protection against external influences, particularly protection against damage to cables. There are also requirements for providing automatic life support for high density livestock rearing. The new requirements for documenting the installation are also discussed.
