Abstract
Theoretical and numerical studies of the collective acceleration of positively charged ions by a moving virtual cathode in a cylindrical two-section transport system were conducted. It is shown that on decay of a compressed electron beam, the mechanism of ion acceleration is more efficient than that during the formation of a compressed beam, where the virtual cathode shits toward the injection plane. For the SINUS-7 accelerator parameters under study, the output ion energy was several times greater than the injected electron energy.
