Abstract :
A hybrid image coding scheme using the wavelet transform (WT) is presented. The advantages of the wavelet representation are utilized to decorrelate the high information redundancy between the adjacent image lines. The coding of the resulting multiresolution difference signals takes into account the human visual system (HVS). This paper analyses the statistical characteristics of the difference information. The quantization and coding techniques incorporating the human visual characteristics and the probability distribution of the difference signals are also discussed. The experimental results demonstrate the better performance of the proposed hybrid coding system compared with the results achieved previously.<>
