Abstract :
Discusses the wavelet transform and its applications in image compression. A new method of decompositions of multi-resolution images is proposed according to the wavelet transform theory. The vector quantization technique is used for encoding various multi-resolution images. Computer simulations are carried out. The experimental results indicate that the method of image encoding by the wavelet transform is very effective, and in the restored images, the degradation is almost imperceptible compared with the original image in human vision. When the coding-rate is 0.7812 bits/pel., the signal-noise-ratio is 26.04 dB in the restored image. When the coding-rate is 2.5 bits/pel., the signal-noise-ratio is 32.44 dB.<>
