Abstract
A comparison of narrowband and broadband overlay of cellular CDMA system on a GSM system from the viewpoint of capacity is carried out. As a narrowband overlay the IS-95 system is adopted. By a specific way of setting up a CDMA channel one can find the average power of interference in the GSM system caused by both narrowband and broadband CDMA overlay and vice versa. The interference power enables one to evaluate the degradation of performance in terms of the carrier-to-interference ratio and capacity. Despite what seems to be intuitively clear the narrowband overlay is more effective and provides a higher capacity
