Abstract
The paper identifies three different corona onset mechanisms for a water drop as a function of air pressure. A model which determines the corona onset potential as a function of air pressure for a water drop is presented. The model takes into account changes in the drop shape with applied E-field as well as drop volume and field divergency. The results of the model are compared to measured data and conclusions drawn. The effect changes in relative air density (RAD) have on corona from water drops on transmission lines is investigated in order to facilitate effective and efficient designing of transmission lines at varying altitudes
