A simple method of evaluating the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding performance in coded pulse position modulation (PPM) laser communication (lasercom) systems with direct detection is given for both shot-noise limited Poisson and thermal-noise limited avalanche photodetection (APD) receivers.<>
