Abstract :
The drive for untethered (mobile) communication plus the almost unsatisfiable hunger for (multimedia) bandwidth are considered a given problem, for which a good solution will reap great rewards. The solution may be found along an evolutionary path by, say, enhancing GSM, and it may come about by developing new concepts that greatly improve the applicability and capacity of mobile communications. The latter approach is taken in a multi disciplinary research project, which is reported herein. We present a combination of promising applications, novel user-interfaces, better compression, protocols geared to the mobile user and -most importantly-transmission techniques that give abundant bandwidth to the user. This will lead the way to 4th generation mobile communication systems that will make our lives more efficient and more enjoyable.
