Abstract :
This study aimed at investigating the potential applications of the China Brazil Earth Resource Satellite 2(CBERS-2) image data in flood disaster remote sensing monitoring and assessing. We selected the area of Lixiahe situated in the north of Jiangsu province, China, as the study area, which is part of the drainage area of Huaihe River. In the summer of 2003, this area seriously suffered from flood disaster. CBERS-2 image data from Nov. 16th, 2003 was used. We also used RADASAT image, high-resolution airborne radar image and Landsat-5 TM image data in this study. Based on the detailed analysis of satellite images by visual interpretation and comparison, combined with field validation, the applicability of CBERS-2 image data in flood disaster monitoring and assessment was evaluated in the following 3 aspects: 1) analyzing and assessing the disaster situation; 2) producing data of normal water extent; and 3) producing orthographic maps for flood disaster monitoring
