Abstract :
Knowledge creation is a basic element of regional innovation system and its capacity can affect the innovation performance of a region. In this paper, effort is made to analyze efficiency of knowledge creation of 31 Chinese provinces. Firstly, invention patents and SCI publications are the outputs of knowledge creation, and full-time equivalent of R&D personnel and internal expenditure on S&T activities are being as the inputs to produce knowledge. Then, data envelopment analysis (DEA) is introduced and employed as a quantitative method to compare the knowledge creation efficiency of 31 Chinese provinces. Through collecting data from China Statistical Yearbook on Science and Technology (2005-2008), the efficiency scores of 31 provinces have been obtained and analyzed. The result shows the relative efficiency of 31 regions in China is not high. Finally, this paper concludes with a brief summary of the main findings.
