Abstract :
This talk will summarize some of the major steps in the development of microwave periodic-structure theory, which has become highly developed and sophisticated over the years. The recent contributions made by the users of photonic-band-gap (PBG) terminology are then examined within the historical development in order to assess those contributions and the value to the microwave rield of PBG terminology. The conclusion is drawn that those contributions have been valuable, for several reasons, but that the terminology is inappropriate and should be discouraged.
