Abstract
This paper introduces tall microstrip transmission lines (TMLs) as a new low-loss and efficient excitation method for dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs). Low-permittivity DRAs which cannot be easily excited by direct conventional microstrip lines, are effectively fed using this method and as a result wideband operation is achieved. Two different TML structures are proposed and the impact of their parameters on the antenna performance is studied. Since TML is a low loss transmission line and DRA is a low loss radiator, TML-DRA forms an excellent wideband antenna system with high radiation efficiency especially for millimetre-wave applications.
