  • Abstract
This paper presents the planning and prespecification study analysis and results for the joint use of static VAr compensators (SVCs), a form of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) technology, for the Mead-Adelanto Project (MAP) and the Mead-Phoenix Project (MPP). These studies demonstrate, through the application of SVCs, the enhanced transient stability and power transfer capabilities of MAP and MPP when added to stability limited paths. In addition, the SVC control strategies and analysis performed during the prespecification studies address SVC interaction issues with other equipment in the area and with the AC network. These two 500 kV AC transmission line projects are currently under construction and scheduled to be in service in the Southwestern United States in December 1995. This will be the first SVC application for new 500 kV AC transmission facilities in the region
