The sustainability of national competitive advantages will depend on each country´s flexibility to globalize, as well as its complementary role toward CSR-specific technological capabilities. This paper considers fifty-one countries´ corporate social responsibility (CSR) and globalization contributions to sustainable development and productivity in 2006. It compares developed countries with developing countries, given that they are both ´essentially contested nations´. After analyzing the concept of the need for sustainable development and productivity in light of globalization and CSR, the paper concludes that while CSR may indeed lead to the desired goal - sustainable development both in developed and developing countries. We also suggest avenues for future research to explain how CSR may lead to competitive advantage and superior economic performance.
