Abstract
The growth of environmental concerns, and the rapid increase in electrical power demand, increased interest in renewable energy. Wind energy is a clean, cheap, abundant source that could be utilized in rural areas. However, continuous variation of wind speed results in severe power quality problems, especially in a stand-alone village network. This paper proposes a cheap and robust FACTS based dynamic voltage regulator (DVR) controlled by a tri-loop dynamic error-driven PI controlled PWM. This could be used to improve the power quality in a rural load fed from a wind driven separately excited (SE) squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG). The effect of wind speed and load disturbances on the power quality is illustrated via simulation. Introduction of the DVR to the network establishes a significant enhancement to power quality. The significant improvement is illustrated via comparing the simulation results of the studied network with and without the DVR.
