Abstract
Efficient and precise compensation of the range cell migration (RCM) effect is a key point for a fast and accurate synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) data processor. In particular, the range dependent nature of RCM complicates the compensation operation. It has been recently shown that an exact compensation of the range dependent RCM phenomenon can be carried out by applying the chirp Z transform procedure. A new phase preserving SAS processor that solves the range dependent RCM is presented and verified theoretically in this paper, as well as its limitations. The operations involved are only Fourier transforms and multiplications, no interpolation used. The performance of the new processor is demonstrated by experiments with simulated and real data.
