Abstract
This paper presents a case study for demonstrating the capability of static phase shifter (SPS) in enhancing the damping of the inter-area oscillations in a multi-machine power system. In this context, investigations are conducted on a three-area test system. The local and inter-area modes of such a system are identified using eigenvalue analysis and a supplementary control for the SPS is proposed. Time domain simulations are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed controller. The results obtained validate the effectiveness of the SPS in damping the inter-area oscillations.
