Abstract
The types of electrical discharge that cause a substantial temporary loss of hydrophobicity for EPDM, PTFE and silicone rubber have been identified; surprisingly, an appreciable gain has also been observed. The time constant of the recovery process has been determined for various commercial insulators and coatings. Possible degradation, enhancement and self-repair mechanisms plus some practical aspects are briefly discussed
