Abstract
To meet the increasing demand for a good quality and economical electricity supply, speedy analysis of large amounts of real-time data of power systems and the development of new strategies for forward looking operation and planning are necessary. These major objectives require high performance in scheduling and power application functions. Hong Kong Electric´s (HEC) existing EMS and DMS have been used for more than 10 years. A new EMS/DMS supplied by Siemens are expected to be commissioned in late 1997. The new EMS project takes an integrated approach in linking all the above real time control and studying functions with the use of a common database. This paper describes the expected improvement on day to day operation and planning on these areas with reference to current practices and utilization of available tools in HEC from the user´s point of view
