Abstract :
High impedance surfaces (HIS) as substrates are studied as an efficient way of designing low profile antennas. HIS of printed dogbone elements on a grounded substrate was previously used for improving the radiation performance of a printed folded dipole on top of it. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the HIS comprising dogbones can also be used as an antenna itself, thanks to the leaky waves it supports. Hence the third metallic layer for a dipole on top is eliminated. In this article we analyze two ways of feeding the HIS antenna without a third layer (the dipole on top), and discuss on the matching possibilities by preserving the desired radiation pattern.
