Abstract
Active integrated antennas are a synergistic mixture of circuit and antenna technologies, that has lead to a range of innovative structures and geometries, which are now being developed for inclusion in a number of practical applications. However the mixture leads to some limitations and these are reviewed. Furthermore there are new opportunities opening up including integration with photonic systems, and the use of micromachining that will contribute to a continuing interest in this topic
