Abstract :
Recently, it was demonstrated that the super-resolving characteristics of a biomimetic antenna array (BMAA) that mimics the sense of directional hearing of the parasitoid fly Ormia Ochracea come at the expense of its available output power. In this paper, we show that for any given desired response, an optimum BMAA implementation exists that results in maximum available output power. This optimum implementation will significantly enhance the range of a super-resolving BMAA. We also prove that strong mutual coupling between the antennas can be exploited to further enhance the available output power. Thus, unlike conventional arrays, mutual coupling is very beneficial in BMAAs. Measurement results of a fabricated prototype are presented and experimentally verify these theoretical findings.
