Incentives have been increasingly applied to align the objectives of participants in the delivery of construction projects. However, little research has been undertaken to systematically study the use of such incentives from the point of incentive theory. The paper assesses such incentive mechanisms along a logic sequence: static incentive contracts for individual contractor include single-tasking incentives and multi-tasking incentives; static contracts for contractors include tournament and project-specific partnering; dynamic incentives for contractor/s mean strategic alliancing from relational contract. Therefore, four principles are provided during the period of designing incentive contracts for construction projects.
