Abstract
Digital subscriber line (DSL) promises to become one of the most important last mile solutions. Quality of service (QoS) of emerging applications based on wireline access infrastructure, like voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) or video on demand (VoD). will have a substantial influence on the success of the employed technologies. Although the end-to-end link, comprising different components and communication layers, should be assessed. it is vital to study the different disturbing elements per se to understand their influence and develop distinct counter measures. In this paper we analyze the twisted-pair (TP) channel at physical layer level. Ongoing and future activities that aim at robust transmission and/or further exploitation of the transmission media are investigated.
